New York University Politics Department
NYU’s Politics Department wanted its new 15,000 square foot facility to encourage interaction among the faculty, and between faculty and students. At the same time other departments were still to occupy portions of the existing construction space.

Graf & Lewent reorganized the space to improve circulation, and incorporated inviting lounge and meeting areas at key locations. As a focal point for the Department’s activities, Graf & Lewent designed the Computer Classroom and Computer Lab spaces as freestanding glass enclosed pavilions. These major spaces are visible from the main circulation and reception area, where Graf & Lewent uncovered the building’s “mushroom” columns to create a dramatic high-ceiling focus for the department.
