|Vaughn College Aviation Training Institute|
Graf & Lewent Architects assisted Vaughn College with development of their new Aviation Training Institute from evaluating site locations and preparing test fit plans.
A 33,000 square foot, former coffee kettle factory in Astoria, Queens was selected for the facility.
The bulk of the space is devoted to a series of labs and classrooms where students are trained in specialties such as hydraulics, fuselage construction, and electrical systems for aircraft. A lounge and casual workspace was created near the entrance, and faculty offices were located on the mezzanine. In the labs, mezzanine and lounge areas the two story high roof structure, ductwork and other building utilities were left exposed.
The buildings infrastructure was upgraded to improve the learning environment and energy efficiency of the building. New HVAC and electrical systems were installed, as well as a new insulated roof. The perimeter walls were insulated, and a thermally efficient translucent wall panel system was installed in place of the failed industrial glazing.
