Aviation Training Institute

Vaughn College, Astoria, NY

Project size : 20,000 SF

Graf & Lewent Architects assisted Vaughn with the development of their new ATI facility from the earliest stages by helping to evaluate several potential buildings to house the program and preparing test-fit plans. A 33,000 square foot, former coffee kettle factory in Astoria, Queens, was selected for phased development of the ATI facility. The project pictured is the first phase of the fit out, involving the complete renovation of about 20,000 square feet . The bulk of the space is devoted to a series of labs and classrooms where students are trained in specialties such as hydraulics, fuselage construction, and electrical systems for aircraft. A lounge and casual workspace was created near the entrance, and faculty offices were located on the mezzanine. At the labs, mezzanine and lounge. the 2-story high roof structure, ductwork and other building utilities were left exposed. The building infrastructure was upgraded to improve the learning environment and energy efficiency of the building. New HVAC and electrical systems were installed, as well as a new insulated roof. The perimeter walls were insulated, and a thermally efficient translucent wall panel system was installed in place of the failed industrial glazing.
